The name of the author is expressed through the names of important persons. "Ḏū al-Nūn", the name of the prophet Yūnus (Jonah) is used to indicate the first name of the author, i.e.Yūnus; the laqab "al-Ṯawrī" refers to Sufyān al-Ṯawrī and "Asad Allāh" is one of the laqabs of ʻAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. The author's name is thus Yūnus b. Sufyān b. ʻAlī.
