Biographic comments

Born in Suhraward, he is one of the most influencial figures of Sufism, not to be confised with Abū Nāǧib al-Suhrawardī, put to death in Aleppo on 1191. He was among the diciples of ʻAbd al-Qādir al-Ǧīlānī, but the former followed the šāfiʻī maḏhab, while the latter was ḥanbalī. He was also in relation with the main figures of Middle Eastern Sufism.

His major work is the ʻAwārif al-Maʻārif, often quoted in later sources, also in Sub Saharan Africa.
