Biographic comments

One of the most venerated Muslim saints in Ethiopia. Details of his life are recorded in a corpus of materials consisting of popular legends and genealogical facts. The material has been edited and published in three anonymous booklets in Arabic (Cairo, 1927), but the historicity of the person remains uncertain. According to the tradition, he was born in Wabi Šäbälle valley in Anaaǧina, Bale, where he spent his life and where his shrine was later situated. Šayḫ Ḥusayn is also the name of the place where the zāwiya of Nūr Ḥusayn is situated, ca. 150 km NE from the town of Robee.

According to a genealogical document, ʻUṯmān al-Markay al-Hāšimī was a descendant of Nūr Ḥusayn (S. Said in Enc. Aeth.).

According to a genealogical note in AAIE01853, fol. 1r, he was related to Aḥmad b. ʻUmar al-Zaylaʻī .
