Biographic comments

Arab grammarian. He was born in al-Andalus and was at first a Mālikī. He later settled in Syria and became a Šāfiʿī. According to Ibn Mālik, the authentic ʿarabiyya was present also in the aḥādīṯ and not only in the ancient poetry and Qurʾānic prose as his predecessors had maintained. Ibn Mālik's Alfiyya is a versified abridgment of his al-Kāfiya al-šāfiya. Alfiyya has been the subject of at least 43 commentaries.
