Biographic comments

A. J. Drewes has been full professor of South Semitic languages and literature at the University of Leiden, from 1968 to 1998. His research includes Ethiopic epigraphy, Semitic linguistics (his interest for Silt'e Gurage made him one of the pioneering scholars in this field) and Islamic literature of Ethiopia. He traveled there several times from 1954 to 1957 and from 1964 to 1974, collecting manuscripts (bought, photographed or simply cataloged in situ). He is also the author of a seminal study on the Islamic literature in Amharic language.
