At his father's death he seized the throne and exiled his elder brother Abba Gomol to Kaffa. He had the plan to conquer all the Gibe states and his exploits push the kingdoms to form a secred alliance to come in assistance of each other in case of his attacks. His main rival, Abba Bagibo, infiltrated the nobility of Jimma and turned them against Abba Rebu's war of conquest. With his oppressive policy towards the "sorressa" (the wealth men) of his land Abba Rebu had alienated the elite who conspired with his external enemies to get rid of him. He was killed in Gomma, during one of his conquering attacks, by an army formed by the combined force of the four states of the Gibe Valley.
