Biographic comments

Traditionist and commentator of the Coran, was born in Balkh and lived in Marw, Baghdad and Basra, where he died in 150/767. He is also said to have taught in Mecca, Damascus and Beirut. His prestige as a traditionist is not very great; he is reproached with not being accurate with the isnād. His exegesis enjoys even less confidence in particular for his professing to know everything. His elaborations of Biblical elements in the Coran and his tracing every allusion back to the "People of the Book" heightened his disrepute in later centuries.
