Champion of the traditional Sunni Islam, he is the author of a large number of books about the Prophet and the related devotional practices. Originally from Syria, he studied in al-Azhar starting from 1866, but moved back to Šām and then to Istanbul, where he also edited the periodical al-Ǧawā'ib.
He travelled also in Iraq and Lebanon, where he worked as judge. He is considered an authority regarding the prayer on the Prophet, while his Sufi affiliation is not clear.
