• al-Maqrīzī, Taqī al-Dīn Abū al-ʻAbbās Aḥmad b. ʻAlī b. ʻAbd al-Qādir

Egyptian historian, born in Cairo where he was also educated. He exercised different administrative and scholarly functions, such as deputy judge, muḥtasib, preacher, imām. He spent about 10 years in Damascus from 810/1408 where he held teaching, jurudical and administrative positions. Once come back to Egypt he devoted himself full-time to historical scholarship. He died in Cairo after having spent some years in Mecca. His most famous work is al-Mawāʻiẓ wa-l-iʻtibār fī ḏikr al-ḫiṭaṭ wa-l-āṯār (ed- Būlāq 1270) which deals with the topography of Cairo and Fusṭāṭ, Alexandria and Egyptian history. He also wrote monographs on history of the dinasties (Fāṭimids, Ayyūbids, Mamlūks), economic history, social history, geography and natural sciences.
