He was born in Ethiopia around 1865 in a family who claimed descent from ʻAbd al-Qādir al-Ǧīlānī. He received his Qurʼānic education in Ethiopia then he travelled to Mecca and continued his studied there. When he returned he settle in Baylul and later in Ṭīʻò where he was appointed qāḍī for the Afar tribes in 1897. He was a religious reformer especially calling to abandon legends and superstiotions widespread among the Muslims in Dankalia. He wrote a book of prayers for the pilgrims on the way to Mecca and a poem in praise of the Prophet.
